Tengu (drypoint etching by Yaemi Shigyo)
Tengu

Drypoint etching, 200×150, February 2010

Series: Japanese phantoms

Tengu are deities or Yokai in many places as folk beliefs in Japan. In general, it’s said that they wear the robes of a mountain priest, have a long nose, and fly through the air with their wings. They come in many shapes and forms, and a Tengu with a long nose is called a Hanadaka-Tengu. Last year I made a one-plate drypoint etching work Prophetic Tengu of Dewa Province, then I wanted to make a print using multiple plates, and not related to the prophetic beasts. It’s double the size of the previous Tengu print, using three plates. This time I tried printing on Gampi paper. (Gampi is a plant used for Japanese paper. It’s handmade by a traditional method.)
