Prophetic Tengu of Dewa Province

Drypoint etching, 100×150, December 2020

Series: Japanese phantoms

This is a Tengu (long-nosed goblin) who appeared at a liquor shop in Taiheizan, Akita-gun, Dewa Province (now Akita Prefecture) in the Edo period. It predicted that there would be good harvests for seven years, and that people would get a bad disease after evil winds on the eighth night of every month. But it also said that people would be saved from bad luck if they displayed its picture on their door.
