Kappa

Drypoint etching, 100×150, November 2021

Series: Japanese phantoms

Kappa traditions are handed down orally all over Japan, and the common name and form are different in various regions. I choose a typical appearance that I think of: a body like a child, green, with a saucer on top of the head, and a carapace on its back. Cucumbers are their favourite food. There is a story that they lure people who happen to pass by into a body of water, but there is also a story that they are friendly and have a strong sense of duty.
